MIT COMMUNICATION FORUM:
The University, the Library, and Information Technology
Thursday, March 16, 1995
4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Bartos Theatre Bldg. E15-070 (20 Ames St.) Lower Level
================================================================
Electronic communication and computer-based information networks
provide an opportunity to address the economic pressures facing
research libraries and to advance university missions of teaching
and research. The rapidly developing electronic environment
could provide university faculty and students with new options
for the collection and dissemination of scholarly information,
options that could both expand access to university-generated
information and reduce the unit cost of that access. Over the
longer term, electronic communication and computing technology
could generate new ways of collaborating in the conduct of
research as well as the dissemination of results. Speakers will
draw upon the recent study conducted by the Association of
American Universities and the Association of Research Libraries
and will focus on: a national strategy for managing scientific
and technological information; intellectual property rights in
the electronic environment; acquisition and distribution of
foreign language and area studies materials; and the changing
role of the university presses in the new electronic era.
Speakers:
Charles M. Vest, President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Laura N. Gasaway, Director of the Law Library and Professor of
Law, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Jay K. Lucker, Director of Libraries, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology
Donald B. Simpson, President, Center for Research Libraries,
Chicago
Frank Urbanowski, Director, MIT Press
