ANNOUNCING ELIBDEV JANUARY, 1995

In January, 1992, a cross-section of the MIT community who were then
interested in the design and delivery of electronic library services
gathered at the Hyatt Regency for an all-day "summit" at which the ideas
for the MIT Distributed Library Initiative were fleshed out. A number of
other good ideas were advanced that day, and have been implemented in the
time since. Much of the success that we are now having in a wide variety
of collaborations can be traced to that auspicious beginning.

Well.... It's time to take stock, and make more plans, and so...

Recently, the MIT Libraries/Information Systems Steering Group (Libtalk)
agreed to sponsor, plan, and schedule another gathering similar to the one
back in '92 sometime during the upcoming Spring Term. The date, location,
participants and agenda for this meeting are not yet set. This time,
though, instead of "mostly blue sky" talk, the next gathering promises to
be in part a look back to what we've accomplished, in part an assessment of
where we are today, and in part another look forward to where we want to be
3 to 5 years from today. DLI successes are attributable to getting the
right people in touch with each other, and planning this new summit will
benefit from perspectives from all levels and vantage points.

Much has happened to elibdev as well since its inception back in Summer,
1991. At our next meeting on January 6, 1995, we'd like to hear your
thoughts on all aspects of the upcoming "summit."

To prepare, consider these questions:

        * Who would you like to be invited to the Spring gathering?
        * What do you want to recognize & celebrate?
        * What have we forgotten?
        * What are the issues and questions that bedevil you in 1995?
        * What new services do you think we need?
        * How should we organize the Spring gathering?
        * What are new opportunities that are especially important to MIT?

After the meeting, we will feed your thoughts to Libtalk and to DLICC as
they also ponder questions like these and begin the process to organize
this new DLI summit.

The elibdev meeting will be held on January 6, 1995 at noon in E40-382.
Brown bags are (as always) most welcome.
