Subject: New Libraries' Operating System
I am very pleased to report that the IS/Libraries Steering Committee
has chosen Geac Advance as the Libraries' new operating system.
Members of the Committee met with Geac management on October 6 at
which time a revised budget proposal was presented by Geac. This
proposal was accepted by the IS/Libraries group the following day.
We will be sending a letter of intent to Geac shortly indicating that
we will be negotiating a final contract with them. We are awaiting a
price quotation on the server machine that is needed to complete the
budget model for the project. We will be begin working with Geac
immediately on scheduling and implementation planning. A full schedule
including target dates will be forthcoming soon.
The Geac contract will contain a section relating to five specific
areas in which MIT and Geac will be working in partnership:
security; technical services workstation; archives management; visual
image support; and the World Wide Web applied to Advance.
A New System Steering Group will coordinate overall implementation of the
system and includes Greg Anderson, David Ferriero, Carol Fleishauer,
and Dan Weir (IS). Day to day implementation will be coordinated by
BOG and its functional groups.
We are excited about being back on track with the implementation of a
new system. The challenges we faced this summer are behind us thanks
to the superb response of everyone involved in the Libraries and in
IS. We are pleased with the new working relationship we have
established with Geac and look forward to a very productive
partnership.
