Recent e-mail messages involving several members of the Libraries'
staff have raised an issue upon which I feel compelled to comment.
During my years in the Libraries I have always felt that a hallmark of
this organization is the mutual respect and sensitivity demonstrated
by the staff in interpersonal relations. I have also tried to
encourage the free and open discussion of issues by maintaining a
variety of channels for staff to engage in dialogue and debate.
Concurrently, I believe that it is essential that we maintain a high
level of civility and respect for each other regardless of the
pressures of time and work that characterize our lives. Furthermore,
we should not permit the use of electronic communication to divert us
in any way from that position. Disagreements about how things should
be done are inevitable in any large organization but they need to be
discussed and settled objectively. I appreciate all of your efforts
to continue to work together toward our collective goals with due
respect and regard for each other.
