                             DLI Projects Team

Attending: wdc, owens, diego, tjm

We identified the six primary project areas that we would report on:

        1. A New Network OPAC
        2. Library Services from Athena
        3. TULIP
        4. Slash 8000
        5. Medline
        6. FirstSearch

For each of these, we discussed, and we report below,

        A. Good Things Done Lately (aka Accomplishments)
        B. Goals for 9/15/93
        C. Issues and
        D. Long-term Goals.

1. A New Network OPAC
This project is composed of subprojects: Willow, Wilco, Z39.50, Newton

        A. received alpha snapshot of Wilco software from U. W.
           added interruptability to Z39.50 searching
finished coding of BIB routines for Willow client to display
                summary and brief records found
        B. rollout new tty interface to Barton 8/23, eliminating VT100 interface
take alpha snapshot of Willow version 2 from U. W.
finish coding of BIB routines to display full record
        C. release of this OPAC requires SCAN for browing authors/titles.
This in turn requires a new version of Newton (possibly
only 2 mos. away), a new version of Willow, including
coding changes that MIT may need to code, and a new
version of the Z39.50 software, which are trivial, but
which MIT may need to code.

2. Library Services from Athena

Nothing to report in this area...other than there's a new committee
forming to take charge of what should happen in this space.

3. TULIP
        A. Learned how to make SGML & BER bits from TULIP TOC CDROMs
Loaded test sample of TULIP TOC into Newton (IS)
Mounted test sample of TULIP Images (LCS)
        B. Mount complete set of TULIP TOC data in Newton from CD received
              to date.
Resolve (or advance) the FTP policy from Elsevier
           Determine priority for TULIP project
Followup on Mitchell's recent suggestion to dlicc
        C. Priority seems high, resources allocated are small.

4. Slash 8000

        A. Tom has been putting a major effort into getting GEAC data
ready for migration effort to new operations system.
        B. This is an ongoing effort, and will probably only increase.

5. MEDLINE

        A. MEDLINE subscription has been cancelled at the end of the current
           year
        B. develop and articulate a strategy for support transition from
current local db model to the firstsearch model
        C. when should we stop loading tapes locally?
when should we tell BRS that we won't be renewing the software?
what is the relationship of this service to the availability of
                OCLC Z39.50 service?

6. FirstSearch

        A. tfirst now works on Suns and RS/6000s.
        B. develop a plan for using tfirst for access to MEDLINE via FirstSeach
        C. username/password hiding scheme now in use is NOT SECURE.
