We worked up the following list of topics that "elibdev" would like to discuss,
and perhaps work toward solutions for, in the near future:
1. authenticated services for non-Athena users.
2. password hiding -- e.g., for FirstSearch, Avery Index, etc.
3. Release Management Process
how to get what we do out the door
assigning resources
getting the right signoffs
doing publicity, training, etc.
4. restricting athena workstations in libraries to just libraries work
5. consideration of the X terminal/host model instead of workstation model.
We cut off the brainstorming at this point, and proceeded to talk about #1 in
more depth. Some notes from that discussion:
* the libraries consider research labs a major customer segment
* access to many Athena services routinely exclude research staff, although
certainly not students or faculty.
* concerns about third party software and licensing for same was the reason for
the Athena accounts policy.
* some models for providing access to services were advanced:
-- the TechMail authenticated access model as applied to library services
-- dialin/character-based only timesharing
-- telnet/higher-capable timesharing
* each of these models has a different cost and some are limiting in various
respects.
* we did not make any final decisions...we agreed to give more thought into
which of these might be pursued
The assembled masses agreed to meet monthly, the first Friday of each month, for
the Fall Term (I hope this is acceptable to those who were unable ;-( to meet
with us today).
The dates of those meetings are:
September 3
October 1
November 5
December 3
Meetings are held from noon - 1:30 in E40-382 (some may be shorter!), and
brownbagging is encouraged.
