Subject: new version of libs

Greetings!

As Christmas approaches, I finally have the pleasure of announcing the
availability of the production release of version 2.0 of LIBS for VMS and Unix.
I would like to thank all the beta testers who reported miscellaneous bugs and
deficiencies of the beta versions. I have, I hope, fixed all those that I was
able to replicate. I have also added a considerable number of new sites, and
updated information for a number of others, to keep the program current.

It is highly recommended that if you are currently using either 1.x or the beta
2.0 version, you replace them with the new 2.0 version. Once little wrinkle is
that from December 24 to January 4, our campus power will be extremely
unreliable because of maintenance work. If you have problems reaching
sonoma.edu during that time, please be patient!

For VMS sites, simply get the new libs.com from /pub on sonoma.edu using
anonymous ftp. Version 1.x of LIBS and libsbeta.com no longer exist. If you are
using VMS, you do not need to read any further - the following instructions are
for Unix sites only.

If you are installing the software under unix, you will need to take the
following steps:

Connect to sonoma.edu with anonymous ftp. Then use the following commands:

sonoma.edu> cd /pub
sonoma.edu> type image (or type binary if this does not work)
sonoma.edu> get libs.tar
sonoma.edu> close
sonoma.edu> quit
> tar xvf libs.tar
> cd libs
> libs.sh

If all goes well, you can save about 600k of disk space by saying:

> cd ..
> rm libs.tar

Alternatively, if you are are reasonably familiar with unix, you can pick up a
compressed version of the file under the name libs.tar.Z. This requires you to
decompress the file before you can extract the file from the archive. In the
interests of simplicity, the standard instructions above assume that people
will use the unconpressed version. The advantage of getting the compressed
version is that it will transfer more rpaidly, and save some network traffic.

What all these commands do is to copy the file in binary mode to your local
system. You must ftp this file in image or binary mode - it will not work if
you
transfer it as an ASCII file! The tar command extracts several hundred small
files which now make up libs into a new libs directory. To run the program, you
reset your default directory to the new directory that contains libs.sh and
invoke the program by typing libs.sh. If you only use this program for your
personal purposes, you can simply cd libs and type libs.sh at any time to run
it. If you are installing it for others to use, make sure you put all the .sh
files in a directory that is in the users' path, or that you change the
definition of PUBDIR in libs.sh to the directory where it is located. The
important thing is that when the top-level program tries to locate the various
subfiles, they should either be in a default directory or in a directory that
you have identified specifically with the libs program. If you do not do this,
you will get an "sh: not found" message every time you try to connect to any
service.

As always, if you find any error in the software, or would like your
institution
included in the listings, please send mail to me at:

resmer@sonoma.edu.

The version of the software maintained on our ftp server is always the latest
one. Many incremental revisions are made in this software on an ongoing basis,
indicated by letter suffixes (e.g. 2.0a, 2.0b etc.). This email list is only
notified when major revisions are made (e.g. 2.1, 2.2 etc.) I will be sending
out notification if any major buges are found in the beta version, and when the
testing period is over. If you find and report a bug, you should, in general,
be
able to pick up a fixed version of the software within a couple of weeks.

Mark Resmer
