Hello,

Jim Repa wrote a nice Perl program platform_edit.pl which allows you to convert a text file with platform specific line-end characters to another platform "format". Thank you, Jim.
I prepared a new tnsnames.ora file to publish in the db services athena locker and used Jim's program to generate *.ora files for three platforms: mac, windows and unix. The program is located in the ds directory: /afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/netdist. The program uses the configuration file platform_edit.conf which is in the same directory. There is a Readme file in that directory with instructions as well.

Three sub-directories were created for the final platform specific files:

/afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/public/macora
/afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/public/unixora
/afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/public/winora

The new procedure of publishing a new version of any of Oracle files will be as following:

1. The database group prepares a new tnsnames.ora or sqlnet.ora or both files and places
    them in the /afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/netdist directory.
2. The config file platform_edit.conf is checked and updated if needed.
3. The platform_edit.pl program is executed. It places a new version of an oracle file in three
    appropriate directories and sends e-mail to ds-ask@mit.edu & netreq@mit.edu
    with notifications:

We've got new Oracle-related files:

 /afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/public/unixora/tnsnames.ora
 /afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/public/macora/tnsnames.ora
 /afs/athena.mit.edu/astaff/project/ds/dbms/oracle/public/winora/tnsnames.ora

The network services updates files on the netdist server for Oracle installers.

Note for Publications.
Please update web pages with the reference to the old oracle files locations. I know only one page "Basic FAQS About SQL*Net at MIT". Possibly there are other. Please feel free to call me or other database group members if there are questions.
