Hi, my name is Dick from the Computing Help Desk. We've run into a
problem with wlprinst.exe, the installer for LPR Spooler. This began
happening today (maybe even before), but when we try to run the
installer from WinNT (observed on WinNT v4.00.1381 at the HD) we get the
following error:
The NTVD CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:04faIP:0169 OP:c7 49 66 8e 22
If we click on "ignore" we get the same error, only a different code
(for example, CS:0000 IP:016f OP:f0 04 07 72 cc, CS:04fa IP:9aca...etc.)
A similar error has occurred with a client on Win98. Again, this has
started recently, and has worked in the past. However, any attempts now
result in this or a similar error.
I have also tried executing the file from the DOS prompt and going into
test, manual, and extract modes, and they all still result in the same
errors.
One thing to note is that although it is an executable file, it doesn't
seem to be recognized as such by the OS--the icon that denotes
executable files is not applied to the wlprinst.exe file, and instead
has the icon given to files of unknown type. Additioinally, the client
in the case (log 124216) said that she received an error message saying
that the file isn't being recognized as a 32-bit executable.
Furthermore, LPRSPOOL.LOG isn't created, so we cannot tell what the
installer has done to the computers.
This version of wlprinst.exe was obtained from:

Please let me know if there is something we are doing wrong, or if there
is something wrong with the installer itself. Also, it would be much
appreciated if you could also cc any response to computing-help@mit.edu,
and have "log 124216" in the subject line. Thank you very much for your
time!
