every once in awhile (once a minute? every five minutes?), there'll be a
horizontal "flash" that's limited to maybe 5-15 pixels in height. It goes
across the entire screen... the screen always recovers and is fine (the
event lasts no more than half a second), but it looks a lot like when you
suddenly cut the power to a monitor (power failure)
