I have resuscitated pit-manager by swapping his disk controller with
the one in crash, and then rewriting /dev/hd0a's boot blocks (since
they were apparently trashed when the controller went south).
The controller that was formerly in pit-manager is now in crash, and
crash no longer gets past the floppy drive when it is powered up. I
left the case screws loose for you :-).
