Some time ago, Richard moved the 6.3 and 6.4 system VAX and RT system
packs to 'alkmene', thus putting all the old packs on a single server
which could be watched for use. We don't think there is any active
use of these packs, so we would like to shut off access to them next
week (on Monday), and see if that causes any problems. If a month goes
by with no reported problems, we would like to make backup tapes of
these volumes, and delete them from disk freeing up the space they
occupy.
Proposed schedule:
Mon Dec 9: shut off access (by setting the acls to
system:anyuser none) for the following volumes:
system.vax.srvd.6.3B
system.vax.urvd.6.3B
system.rt.srvd.6.3B
system.rt.urvd.6.3B
system.vax.srvd.64
system.rt.srvd.64
Mon Jan 6: if there is no need to keep any of these
packs on disk, delete them after making special
backup tape of them
Of course, if a pack is needed, we will set the acl back to
system:anyuser rl as soon as we find out about it. I welcome any
comments on this. We expect this will have no impact on the user community
at all.
Anne
PS I believe there is a security problem associated with use of old
system packs, which some people know how to exploit. This, in addition
to freeing up disk space, is a motivation for getting these old
packs off disk.
