Hello
This afternoon (11/09) the fileserver adam at pika stopped working
without warning. It did not actually crash but there was no way to log
in either on console or over the network. I tried to reboot the system
numerous times and was successful in bringing the machine up in single
user mode only on a few of those occasions. Sometimes, the machine hung
when trying to load system software. On other occasions, the machine
hung before coming up in single user mode. While in single user mode,
the machine always hung when I tried to do an fsck. Craig Fields and I
worked on this problem for a while and we feel that it has something to
do with the disk controller being flaky.
I have been able to set up the network to ftp out but I am unable to
cd to anyone's directories without the machine hanging.

I hope DEC service people will be able to stop by at pika as soon as
possible because a lot of people have work (papers, etc) that is on the
local disks and they need to turn the work in.
