I found it with its lock set to "service" (instead of to "normal", where
it should be, and where it was set yesterday afternoon). It's a mystery how
it got set that way, if a user did it. Anyway, to fix the problem, someone
needs to visit with its key, then
1) set the mode to "normal"
2) reboot it, pressing the yellow button
3) after reboot, try logging in to verify that the
machine is usable
PS In service mode, it seems to only want to run diagnostics...I couldn't
see any way to get it functioning normally with it set to "service"
