For your information, the power dip that occurred on Tuesday, August 6, 2002
at approximately 12:45 PM was due to a fault on NStar's 13.8kV system that
is external to MIT. The dip was felt at many buildings in our Cambridge area
with NStar electric service including some on campus. In addition to those
buildings, the ones serviced by the MIT electric system were affected,
although to a lesser extent, due to the mitigating effect of our
cogeneration unit.
At this point, we are awaiting further information on what caused the dip
and whether another one will occur. We will keep the MIT community informed
if there are further developments.
