This is a the second in a series of 3 scheduled outages to move
the servers that comprise the dev.mit.edu AFS cell.
This Monday, the dev.mit.edu DB and fileserver rattle.mit.edu
will be moved from E40 to W92. This move will affect users with Athena
workstations in the alpha or beta clusters, but should not affect most
Athena users.
rattle will be moved Friday (6/22/2001) at approximately 3pm.
It will have no data on it at the time of its move, so there should be
no user visible outage during the move.
The entire dev.mit.edu cell will be restarted at 1am Saturday
(6/23/2001) morning. This will result in a 5-10 minute outage of the
cell, similar to what is experienced during the Sunday morning restart.
If you have an Athena workstation that reactivates frequently,
no action is required on your part; your machine will pick up the
changes automatically. On Athena machines which do not reactivate
frequently (servers that do not run xlogin, or machines whose primary
users are always logged in on the console), you may wish to log in as
root and run:
/etc/athena/config_afs
sometime after Saturday's restart to pick up the changes. This is most
important if you have an Athena workstation in the alpha or beta
clusters.
Non-Athena machines running AFS will need to update their
CellServDB entry for the dev.mit.edu cell; the new entry will read:
>dev.mit.edu #MIT/IS Development cell
18.7.1.70 #wham.mit.edu.
18.86.0.50 #hum.mit.edu.
18.7.15.89 #rattle.mit.edu.
As always, status notifications will be sent to the consult
instance as necessary.
