Well, I talked to jfc last night, and he said the first thing to try
was to format all my hard disks because one of them might have a bad
block which caused the error. Indeed, when I did the formatting, I
found two previously unlocated bad blocks on one of the disks, so that
may have been the problem.
I'll let you know if it happens again.
