Hello,

My advisor has an SGI R5000 that only has 32MB of memory. We
need 64MB to run the latest upgrade of athena. I believe that we are in
fact paying Athena hardware support fees, though I'm not positive. My
advisor is Gerd Ceder and the machine is lattice. I'd like to know the
costs of upgrading the memory so we can decided whether to upgrade the
memory or downgrade the athena version.

Thank you for your help,

Sally Buta

You would not be able to use this machine with the most recent
release of the Athena software if you were to keep it at only 32 MB of
RAM. The most recent Athena release, version 8.2, requires 64 MB of
memory for the SGI platform. If you did decide to keep the machine at
only 32MB of RAM, you would need to configure it to not automatically
take the new Athena release, and instead continue to run the old
version of Athena, version 8.1. You would also need to request a change
in the Hesiod information of this machine such that the system packs it
uses are for Athena 8.1. The problem you are currently experiencing
with Zephyr is a result of the machine having 8.1 software on local
disk, since its lack of RAM prevents it from taking the upgrade, while
having Athena 8.2 software packs attached. Either allowing the machine
to take the upgrade (after installing more memory), or requesting that
the Hesiod information be changed to point at the older software should
fix your problem.
If you are interested in purchasing more memory for your
workstation, and are paying Athena hardware support fees, you should
contact Athena Cluster Services by sending mail to hotline@mit.edu for
more information.
I hope this helps out. If you need more help, please let us know
by using the "send" command at the olc> prompt, and otherwise, please
mark your question as "done". Thanks for using OLC!
