I did some checking (talked to dkk and jhawk) and now have some clues.
Basicly, the HP5 is smart about how it handles paper. It has an idea of what
size paper is in each tray, and a default tray. If an application does not
specify a tray it goes to the default, but if the application specifies a size
and that size is one of the ones configured for a tray, it will use that
tray. The paper size to tray mapping is a manually configured on the front
panel, as is the defualt paper tray. I suspect that the paper size is
configured correctly (but you should check) but the default tray number is set
for the tray you had legal in.
The reason the mac was getting it right was that the postscript from the mac
probably included a 'pagesize' declaration, and the printer abided by it. When
the Athena print servers convert a file to ps, they include no such
declaration.
The solution is to go into the menus on the console of the printer and make
sure the trays are configured to be the right size, and the default is the one
with letter in it. Unfortunately, I don't have a 5si nearby to play with, so
I can't tell you the exact steps through the menus, but they are *usually*
straightforward. If you can't find it, probably one of the hotline folks
would be able to help, but if not someone from ops who is local might be able
to give you a hand.
Let me know us know if that helps.
