Thank you for the reply, but I need to know where to go from here.
Do I need to have Athena personell there to enter the root password
on this athena machine, in order to actually add the hard drive?
It looks like you won't give us any direction in actually purchasing
the hard drive, so we'll look elsewhere for that... but still need
your help with the password to enable the actual installation.
(again this machien is NOT in a cluster, but in a professor's office.)
thank you,

Subject: adding hardware to athena SGI?
Hello,
I am trying to find out who I can ask about adding hardware,
specificaly an external hard drive to an athena SGi machine in
professor Kit Cummin's office.
thank you,
Gigi Lirot

As for attaching an additional external hard drive, Athena Cluster is
unable to do this. Athena supports a very well defined system and we are
unable to vary from those parameters. You may still attach an external
hard drive to your system but Athena will not support it. Also, if there
is a failure with the machine then the external drive will be removed from
the system before any attempt to fix the machine is made. We do not have
recommendation for a vendor for this. You may want to try SGI, for the external
hard drive.
