At 5:45am (9/5) a switchyard transformer at Boston Edisons Mystic
Station in Everett blew up.
The switchyard transformer failure caused Mystic Station Units 4,5,&6 to
trip. Unit 7 (the largest ) did not trip. The switchyard transformer fed
a major transmission tie line between Boston Edison and New England
Electric. This line is still out of service. Some customers outside of
metropoliton Boston may still be without power.
Most customers within metropoliton Boston saw a brief dip, enough to
reset computers & foul street light and signal controls. Pump starters
would have probably dropped out - many will reset automatically. Our
cogen unit stayed up but some MIT equipment was affected. This type of
extremely brief dip may cause some electronic devices to misoperate
rather than shutdown. Some systems may need to be reset to clear
electronic/software logic glitches. Please check your equipment to
ensure proper operation.
Local repair and maintenance zone personnel have responded to check all
mechanical equipment within buildings. If you have any concerns
regarding your equipment please call your local zone - see
http://web.mit.edu/org/p/plant/www/rm/rm-map.html for zone information.
