To whom it may concern:
I have been having multiple problems using external devices on the
SGI INDY workstations. Specifically, I have tried to read files
from multiple floppy disks and the computer fails to realize
that I have inserted a new disk. A SIPB student was able to correct
the problem by logging in as root and then by deleting a file resident
on the workstation hard-drive that contained a catalog of the files
resident on the old floppy disk. When a new disk was inserted, the
computer then created a new catalog file with the contents of the
new disk. Every time a new disk was inserted to the computer, this
file would have to be deleted before the dos disk could be read.
A similar problem has now occured with the SGI CD-ROM device. After
inserting a CD and running cdman, xmcd, or another cd-player program,
the SGI fails to realize that there is a cd in the cd-rom drive. I
have tried a similar debugging approach to this problem as with the
floppy disk drive, but I do not know where the optical disk catalog
is located on the computer hard-disk. Could you please inform me
of any solutions to this problem.
Thank you,
Chris Rodarte
