Jonathon, JJ et al:

I have checked further with the supervisor and men who requested this
"Critical" shutdown. Critical means that the work has to be done in the
not too distant future--anywhere from one day to perhaps a week (with
close monitorin) if the equipment that has to be repaired lasts that long.

In this particular situation, there is a leak in the reheat and reheat
steam coils causing the coils to shut off. Physical Plant doesn't know how
extensive it is and won't until they can get into the system to check it out.
Hence the reason for a requested 8-hour shutdown. This work may not take that
long, but again, they won't know until they get into the system.

Mr. Scott says that obviously the sooner one can correct this
situation, the better. Physical Plant will try to cooperate with Athena
on this, but Mr. Scott feels that the January date is far too long and this
could end up being a real disaster for all of MIT if not corrected
before long.

Physical Plant personnel can always bring in a large portable fan unit to keep
the room from becoming too warm.

FYI and please advise.

Thanks.

This shutdown is *not* acceptable. We cannot afford to shutdown the
cooling to the athena cluster until after the end of finals. Before
we can determin whether such a shutdown will be acceptable after
finals, we need to determine what the effects will be on the cooling
of w20-575a (the alarmed room to your left as you enter the Athena
cluster on the 5th floor of w20.) The computers in this room are
servers and may not be shut down. I'm not really responsible for the
cluster, so I can't confirm an exact time with you, but other people
on the shutdowns list can.
