I have just checked out this machine and found that, even though
it sounds different, the noise IS coming from the HD. I had replaced
the power supply and strted the machine back up to get the same whine.

I have also discovered that the old Seagate Hawk ST31200N HDs
that work on the R4xxx will not work on the R5000's. I have two of
the Hawks and neither this machine nor Palladium at E40 would even spin
up the drives.

I am going to call SGI to get my two HAwk drives replaced with
the newer ST51080N dries and will be back on Monday to fix Lancaster.

Subject: lancaster.mit.edu making noises
Date: Fri, 15 Nov 96 14:48:38 -0500

Dear Athena Hotline,
lancaster.mit.edu (one of the new Indy
R5000's in 66-070) is making an intermittant high pitched
tone. (about C above middle C) The tone lasts for between a
few seconds to a minute or so. The gaps between the tone
are a minute or two (sometimes longer). The noise does not
seem to be affecting the operation of the computer but is
distracting to the users of the cluster.

The source of the noise is a little difficult to locate but
I'm pretty sure its coming from the blue/teal cpu box. It
happens whether or not someone is logged in.

Could you please help. - Thanks.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send email to
10compta@mit.edu.

Joe W and I sat at the machine for about 15mins and we did
not hear any weirdness, we did have to power cycle the cpu
because of missing pixels in the picture. The system seems
to be fine at this time, if you do experience further problems
do not hesitate to contact hotline.

thanks

I spoke to soon Joe and I finally heard the high pitch whine
I didn't seem to be the normal HD whine but appeared to be
coming from the power supply. Kyle please take a look at this
SGI R5000 when you can sir. Thanks
