\mr-toad capture acting really strange; hardware?

When I run /usr/sbin/capture on mr-toad, the capture window appears,
and then the entire screen is filled with video artifacts. This occurs
even with nothing running besides xterms, a clock, and xload. (even with
no windowmanager.) I suspect it may be hardware related. The capture
program prints these lines:
pixel dma write failed: Invalid argument
repeatedly while capture is messing up the screen.
Can you look at this?
