Hello Joe -
According to a note from Craig Fields, SGI's that have been running
Release 7.7 (IRIX 5.2) of Athena will not automatically upgrade to
Release 8.0 (IRIX 5.3).
Those in the public clusters and classrooms will be taken care of by
Cluster Support. I'm not sure if they have plans to deal with those
SGI's running 7.7 that are in private offices or clusters. I'm not sure
how many of those (outside of IS) there are.
I've personally forwarded Craig's message to Greg Rutledge in Chem Eng,
since he had asked me just a week ago when the new release would be
coming out. As for others, can you generate a list of them (both those
owned by IS and those owned by departments) that will not be taken care of
by the Cluster Support team as part of their regular work. We would
need to contact the cluster managers or other technical support folks
about how to upgrade their Athena SGIs.
If someone in your group has already thought to take care of this problem
and it is well in hand, then please don't let this message obscure
things. I just wanted to be sure that someone was looking after this -
it needn't be me.
