Hi,

Last week, an athena computer (host-name:"rca-sun", supported by
the Athena network) was moved into my lab (66-457). I changed the
hostname and IP address by editing the one line in /etc/hosts file,
as was suggested by athena "olc" consultants.

I did so on Wednesday, and rebooted the machine. Since then, the
computer is not able "to start X", reverts to "console login",
and then just quits after a "60 second login timeout".

Because I am not able to even successfully login, things seem
futile from my end. I have tried
to solve the problem and enlisted the help of wilhelmi@mit.edu and
pjm@mit.edu, who are departmental computer consultants. They have
indicated that since this machine is supported by the Athena
network, you would be the correct people to contact.

I would greatly appreciate having this computer up and running as
quickly as possible, as I do computational research for my thesis.
One guess might be that in addition to my changing the /etc/hosts
file, you'all at athena may need to change permission/security
settings to permit the new hostname to be on the network.

Info:

Here is the new hostname and IP address:

        SUPERMAN.MIT.EDU 18.63.0.195

the old hostname was "rca-sun".

thank you very much,

Sunil
