If people report problems with using MAE on machines in 2-032,
most likely the problems will sound like one of the following:
- I get an error message when MAE starts up, it says that it can
not find /dev/appletalk/lap/ethertalk0/control
- When I look at the chooser, I can't see any AppleTalk zones.
What's wrong?
- When I try to use (Word, Excel, ...) in MAE, I get a message:
"A KeyServer connection could not be established because of
difficulties with the internal networking software".
- When I try to use a floppy disk in MAE I get an error message
that the volume manager isn't running, and I need to contact
my system administrator. What is going on?
The first 3 of these are generally variations on a basic problem,
namely that there is some problem with the state of the mkserv mae
changes that are needed on the 2-032 Sparc 5's. The last item
is usually a result of vold being shut down by a previous user
of the workstation.
To help the CSR's track down the problem, I've written a script
that checks to see if a few obvious files and processes are where
they should be. To run it, just login to the 2-032 Sparc 5 in
question and do the following:
add mae-maint
test-mae-machine
This should catch most of the more obvious system-software-related
issues that have the side effect of causing problems within MAE,
and the script will suggest a course of action for you to follow in
order to (hopefully) fix the problem.
