Problems with samsara

New system software was recently installed on samsara, a Decstation 3100
located in Professor Dennis McLaughlin's office, 48-209. The software
was reinstalled because of continuing, unexplained crashes on the system.

Today I remotely logged into the machine (using telnet) and received the
following disconcerting message:
samsara:~> vi ~/.aliases
Illegal instruction

Vi doesn't work at all. I have not done other extensive tests on the
machine to say what does and doesn't work, but I would think that
vi is pretty basic. Moreover, the following message (still)
occurs, even though the system was (supposedly) updated -- at least
the initialization files were wiped out on /dev/rz3a:
samsara:~> su
Password:
Warning: This workstation has not been upgraded to Release 6.3.
Using old initialization files.

Could someone please come and take another look at this machine?
Access to the room can be obtained through professor McLaughlin
(x3-7176, dennism@athena) or by contacting anyone in 48-205,
x3-5484. Thank you for your assistance.
