i experienced a problem on this machine (m4-167-4) where the mouse
pointer did not move when i moved the mouse, and no characters appeared
in the xterm the pointer was pointing to when i typed things into the
keyboard. stop-a did not result in a reboot shell, so i turned the
machine off.
