Hi. We reported September 1st that war's hard disk was losing with bad
blocks; it was subsequently reformatted and reloaded. I knew this
wouldn't solve the problem (as war's hard disk was generating new bad
blocks over time), but that was the procedure. I reported September
23rd that the hard disk was losing again, expecting the drive to be
replaced. I just got the following information via email from Lou:

> Jay Perry (DEC) has formatted the RD32 hard disk. Now will need software.

John Chase already reformatted the hard disk in early September, and
the workstation was unusable within three weeks. Reformatting it again
will probably buy another two weeks or less of unreliable use. The
drive needs to be replaced, not reformatted. I don't particularly care
to reload the software on the workstation again just to prove it will
break again. I also don't care to provide the users here with a
machine that's likely to eat their work at any time.

The mail I received does not indicate that the drive was replaced, and
Sanjay (the cluster manager here) also does not believe the drive was
replaced.

See hotline discuss meeting transactions 10434 and 10826 for history.

Thanks,
Craig
