Java Architecture for Infrastructure Services

Team Name: Java Architecture

Project Leader: Scott Thorne

Report Date: 3/5/2002

Submitted By: Chuck Shubert

Accomplishments:

We are very pleased to announce that Bibo Lai who has been a volunteer
in our group is now officially a member of the IS staff.

In February we took the OKI Common Service APIs to Key West for review
at the OKI Developers Meeting. A large amount of work was review and a
number of useful suggestion emerged for improving the APIs. Rework and
final reviews have commenced. Efforts are underway to bring this work
to the point that it can be made available for public review and
comment.

The first strawman OKI functional layer API was presented at the OKI
Developers Meeting and generated considerable discussion.

The existing MITID server-side C code was reviewed for the purpose of
extracting the search algorithm and understanding some performance
issues. A Java version of the MITID search algorithm has been created.
Work on an MIT only API for MITID has started. A plan has been created
for developing two implementations of the MITID API. The first
implementation will use the existing private protocol for communicating
between the MITID client and server. The second implementation will
replace the communication layer with a Java client/server.

Goals:

For March we will publish the OKI Common Services APIs and prepare MIT
implementations of those APIs for public review and comment. There is
still a considerable amount of code and documentation to write. In
March we will use several Institute venues to present this work to the
MIT community.

We are starting work on experimental GUIs for using the OKI Common
Services. We are anticipating adding a person to the team to pursue
opportunities in this area.

We will be creating a release of the MITID API and private protocol
implementation for testing.

Issues:

Structuring OKI work in anticipation of additional development help
coming from our OKI partners continues to require attention.

We are moving forward on a number of fronts and this is stretching our
resources.

We have had difficulty bringing new machine resources on line.

Key Learnings:

Development of the Service APIs and their implementations continue with
an emphasis on reworking CVS structure and API details for completeness
and consistency. This is not an easy area to close out.

Team Dynamics:

The OKI team continues to work hard. There is a lot to do right now.
