General
As expected, vacations and travel took a tool on progress during the month.
Nevertheless, the project moved forward. Collaboration with Sarah Williams,
the new Libraries GIS Specialist began in mid July. Much of our future work
will embrace the Libraries GIS Lab plans and our input to Sarah's plans is
vital. Data loading is proceeding, albeit with the numerous expected glitches.
There has been minor issues arising but no show stoppers.
No further work was accomplished on the Apache web server software issue.
We continued to deliver training, consulting, and faculty outreach.
Accomplishments during July
-Daniel Sheehan started to work with the new Libraries' GIS specialist.
Helped to acclimate her to MIT and introduce her to appropriate faculty.
-Started to examine metadata issues, considering possibilities for student
support.
-Continue discussions around authentication.
-Daniel Sheehan and Tom Grayson continued to load data.
-Continued documentation efforts.
Plans for August
-Install working web server on Arrowsmith. Start to work on
whereis.mit.edu page when complete.
-Data loading accelerates rapidily. Assess issues as they come up.
-Determine projection engine needs.
-Consult with Harvard on their ArcIMS/SDE/Oracle implementation.
-Start to implement Harvard's ArcIMS solution at MIT as test.
-Continue to work with Libraries' GIS Specialist.
-Continue with documentation.
-Site visits with Libraries' GIS Specialist.
Issues
-Some members of the team will be away during August. This will slow
progress during the month.
-We hope that the web server software issues are solved during
August. This will take hard work by Miki Luzstig, who needs to collaborate
with Tom Grayson.
-First phase of documentation is going well.
