project name: casetracker 1.5
project leader: barbara goguen, oliver thomas
report date: July 6, 2001
submitted by: barbara goguen
url: http://web.mit.edu/tooltime/notebook/

accomplishments past period:
- set up new categories and email feeds for fss (debra wiley),
software distribution (angela blossom), and sma (gayle willman)
- received draft of documentation on email feed from phyllis galt;
began reviewing all newly drafted documentation
- tested knowledge transfer of system operational issues while oliver
was away and fred baars covered those responsibilities
- determined scheme for setting up the middle (or business logic)
layer to connect the other two pieces, (database Java layer and the
servlet/UI layer).
- code is in place that will create a new case, update a dase and add
a history entry to a case.
- put aside the "demo" and started creating the real casetracker
web application. This is in cvs on tooltime under the project name "caset".
a version of this is deployed on the development machine, url
http://tooltime.mit.edu/
- documented the current c code for updating & creating a case in
order to reproduce the details in the Java code.
- published a document on the project notebook which describes the
organization of the java code.
- created a "use case" diagram to help in my design work.

goals for coming period:
- conduct meeting with directors to discuss project leadership and
ongoing system maintenance issues
- carry out data warehouse download to refresh the lookup data;
document and teach process to fred baars
- determine how best to handle organization of all necessary
documentation including developer "how-to" documents, functional and
interaction documents, administrator and operator documents, etc.
- move email and web enhancements from test into production
- do preliminary tracking of expenses to facilitate the creation of a
casetracker budget should the decision be made to do so.
- determine timing for upgrading production machine to oracle 8.1.7
- incorporate eager and talented student into some of the design and
development work

issues:
- we continue to need more or different resources assigned to project
leadership and system maintenance issues

key learning:
- work moves forward even with the interuptions of summer projects
and vacations

team dynamics:
- all is well with existing members; will need to introduce one
additional new member to the effort in early summer.
