Accomplishments in May
----------------------
In May the team expanded the Pismere machine, newly-delivered to DUSP
and IS early users. The machine approached a point that makes it
ready for academic software installation, the reources for which are
not yet available. We addressed and resolved several high-priority
obstacles - printing, Moira, group policy, and documentation.
Because of Moira-to-Active Directory population performance problems
that we saw with list processing, we had to rework some of that code.
This was the first occasion to remind us to routinely monitor the
production Moira logs.
We redid the structure of group policies and we have no known problems
with it.
We have these new documents (see //web/pismere/draft-documents):
MSIs and links to MS info;
Dos and Don'ts;
Naming conventions;
Group Policy applications;
Information for Container Administrators; and
Login Behavior.
Obtained and set up new developer machines and a backup server and
storage system. Installed the new switch box and it works.
We made a temporary fix to get KLP ports installed in the delivered
machine. Performed several container modifications and advertised new
software including Zephyr, add, attach, athrun, addmenu, addmon,
delmon and Power Archiver. Built installers for SecureCRT, Office and
Netscape.
Designed and built xcacls, a gui for acls.
We now allow branches of and tags for the Pismere source tree, and the
nightly build script uses them.
Lookied at our internally-developed ftp, comparing it to kftp.
We had a team celebration, and salute to three departing students,
Dave Euresti, Luke Douglas and Jamie Rasmussen. With Danilo, Luke
completed his AUP. We welcome two of our new students, Marek Polonski
and Xiaowen Xin.
Finally, after a long effort, and thanks to help from SWRT, we
released KLP.
Goals for June
--------------
- Continue to fine-tune Moira performance.
- Finish and publish final CSG documents.
- Support DUSP, including get Alex P, or someone, building apps in
AFS. More generally, establish a support plan for academic software.
- Begin to develop a service plan for Pismere servers with Athena
Server Operarions and NetOps.
- Continue MS consulting on RIS.
- Kent Post of LCS still needs a meeting with Paul and Tom to explain
the difficulties of W2K domain servers.
Longer Term Goals
-----------------
- Get help from Garry and TomC to put non-null Kerberos instances into
Moira.
- Generic ftp requirements.
- Release Zephyr, Plop.
- Generic logging library proposal - package NT syslogger for other
schools, and get tech pubs help from here or a requesting school.
- We need to do further work to populate AD attributes, such as white
pages info, from the MIT data warehouses.
- Continue planning post-pilot work.
- Work with MS to customize RIS.
Issues
------
- Support and Service staffing plans are slow to develop.
- ITS is underway, creating Kerberos bug logs. Depending on those
results, it may again transfer resources from Pismere for a few weeks.
- When shall we get MS SP and Hotfix source?
- How do we sync our AFS code with Transarc?
- When does the AUI Dash & gnome require Pismere revision?
