Project Name: Enterprise Backup System
Project Leader: Grant Young
Report Date: May 4, 2001
URL: http://windsurf.mit.edu/ebs

Issues:

* For some unknown reason tapes that are perfectly good are not read properly
by Netbackup and get marked as "frozen" due to media read errors. These
tapes get rotated off site but are not expired for return to the available
tape pool. This results in a loss of available tapes over time. Manual
intervention is required to relabel these tapes and return them to
availability. This is a problem at other Netbackup sites that has not
   been addressed by Veritas.

Accomplishments Past Period:

* Continued maintence and operation of the E40 systems. We found and fixed
some problem tape drives in the tape library that were creating some
problems with reliability. We also cleared up a configuration problem that
   cropped up.

* All of the SAP systems are now at recent levels for firmware, OS patches,
and Fibre Channel driver software. This has improved stability
   significantly.

* We split the ongoing work into three areas: Rolling out online backups,
developing reports, and rolling out Netbackup in W91. We are meeting
weekly now to develop plans to attack these areas.

* We met with FSS to coordinate and communicate downtime periods for
reconfiguration work and will meet monthly.

* Jody took a Perl class to help develop reports from the Netbackup logs.

Goals for the Coming Period

* Re-configure SAN hardware in W91 to support Netbackup.

* Determine dates and process for rollout of online db backups in E40.

* Develop requirements and strategy for web-based reporting of backup job
   sucess and failure.

Team Dynamics:

* Good.
