General
-------
The cluster machines deployment to DUSP is within weeks. The major
features we need to deliver to DUSP are DHCP coverage from W92, to
N42, W20, 9 and perhaps 39; and an RIS image with the AFS
loopback/redirector. Applications in lockers awaits AFS.
Accomplishments in February
---------------------------
- Wael installed servers. One was DOA, but we have enough machines to
serve rollout.
- DNS: Since current campus DNS needs upgrading, TomC and Chris
implemented an upgrade, which supports the W2K domain.
- AFS: Davie tests AFS 3.6, and Danilo works on an installer.
- Danilo wrote instructions to manually install and validate AFS.
- Danilo inventoried and began to write installers for services and
components executing locally as a service or in the system context.
- We corresponded with Microsoft Consulting Services to specify the
RIS method to auto-detect the computer container and a router address.
- Tom and Lisa Robinson test alphas of Zephyr, Plop and KLP.
- Paul, Danilo and Joe did ITS work, transefrring some time from
Pismere to ITS.
- Dave has Moira and Data Warehouse populating and synchronizing. He
works on a separate populator server.
- Moira incremental is not yet on a production server. Garry decided
to do an audit, so meanwhile will run it off the test server, and
watch performances of bulk updates. Following that, he will give the
OK to put it on the production server.
- Joe finished ntsyslog.
- Joe continued to lockdown directories with group policy.
- Joe has a script for registry settings on the network adapter.
- Joe wrote ntmaintenance to run logon, logoff, and chron scripts.
- Qing wrote whodat, an app to comprehensively record and transmit
failed attempts to log in.
- We pursued a served MSDN with Mary Ann Ladd at LCS.
- Bryant, with Jamie's help, worked on addmon and delmon to make the
KLP installer more robust.
- Paul and Tom looked at longterm Academic Computing plans.
- We reviewed pushed maintenance scripts. Danilo presented an
initial overview and discussion.
- Paul and Tom sent an invitation to ITLT members to take a Pismere
RIS install. Mike Barker, Bob Ferrara, Dennis Baron and Theresa Regan
have volunteered.
Goals for March
---------------
- DHCP: Serve N42, 9 and W20. Discuss with TomC whether we can
support multiple RIS servers.
- Install ITLT machines.
- Get Garry's OK for Moira and help from him and TomC to put non-null
Kerberos instances into Moira.
- Dave and Qing to work with Paul on win to test schema extensions.
- A new task we should consider would be a port of renew. This task
should do more than simply kinit and aklog, since some tokens, like
AFS, need the equivalent of fsid. Dave may help with this.
- Kevin is looking at our internally-developed ftp, and should compare
it to kftp.
- Continue MS consulting.
- Kent Post of LCS and Phil Thompson of DUSP still need a meeting with
Paul and Tom to explain the difficulties of W2K domain servers.
Longer Term Goals
-----------------
- Generic ftp requirements.
- Release Zephyr, Plop and KLPR.
- Generic logging library proposal - package NT syslogger for other
schools, and get tech pubs help from here or a requesting school.
- We need to do further work to populate AD attributes, such as white
pages info, from the MIT data warehouses.
- Continue planning post-pilot work.
Issues
------
- Will ITS work continue to transfer resources from Pismere a few weeks? This
slips our IAP pilot date.
- When shall we get MS SP and Hotfix source?
- How do we sync our AFS code with Transarc?
- When does the AUI Dash & gnome require Pismere revision?
Additional comments
-------------------
Barring unforseen AFS or DNS obstacles, we should be able to deliver
in a few weeks.
