General
-------

For the goal of a fall deployment of cluster machines in Department of
Urban Studies and Planning, major things needed to achieve this are:
  DNS infrastructure
  Kerberos single sign-on
  AFS
  Directory population
  Installers by Group Policy
  Registry settings
  Applications in lockers

We have made steps toward solutions in all these features. The pilot
delivery seems to be, at best, two months away.

Although we lost the primary disk on our Domain Controller, we
recovered, and even found a workaround for previous problems with
references to our domain, which were created when we set
SmbDeviceEnabled for the AFS client as MS had recommended. This
allows Group Policies to work under Remote Installation.

Accomplishments in September
----------------------------

- Finished kerberos single sign-on functionality.

- Built a local AFS 3.6 with debugging.

- Remote-installed a test machine for Barry Stoelzel.

- Proved Retrospect can back up client machines.

- Revised many utilities, and planned releases with Jon Hunt:
 KfW 2.1
 KLPR
 Zephyr
 Plop

- Microsoft Project Center server and administrator account work. JJV
is deploying it.

- Modular installers are in the build tree.

- Remote install testing is underway

- We use code for strong password generation.

- Washing machine (overnight build) works, and reports results by mail
to a new list, pismere-build.

- IE certificate support under W2K works, thanks to Jeff.

- Built preliminary spec for new servers.

- Dave is populating the AD from Moira.

- Danilo has disk-to-disk server backup working.

Goals for October
-----------------

- Generic ftp requirements.

- Continue with Software Release Team on Zephyr, Plop, KfW and KLPR.

- Expand DNS. DHCP to N42, W20 and 9.

- Coordinate plans with techpubs, training and support.

- Access on/off plan.

- Generic logging library proposal.

- Defragment the AD.

- Work with NetOps to assist with AD population, Athena backup, and
syslog.

- Backup client machines. Install BDC.

- Obtain new servers.

Issues
------
- When shall we get MS RTM source code? Hotfix source?
- How do we sync our AFS code with Transarc?
- Is Kerberos 1.2 beta ready for revised apps?
- Does the AUI Dash & gnome require Pismere revisions?
- Can we get NetOps to assist with Athena backup, and syslog?
- How do we replace and extens our server farm?
- While the Sloan effort to bring up an Exchange server has been
- Qing has yet to find a way to extend the AD UI users and computers
snap-in.

Additional comments
-------------------

- Student coders are called to classwork, so not as available as last month.

- Barring unforseen Kerberos, AFS or AD obstacles, we should be able
to meet our fall pilot date.
