General
-------
For the goal of a fall deployment of cluster machines in Department of
Urban Studies and Planning, major things needed to achieve this are:
  DNS infrastructure
  Kerberos single sign-on
  AFS
  Directory population

We need to attack these features during Paul, Danilo, DaveT and Wael's
absences:
  Installers by group policy
  524 logon
  Registry settings
  Application in lockers

When Paul is away, but when Danilo and Dave return, we hope to
populate the AD. This requires more help from Tom and Garry. DCMs
need to be written for Moira updates to "rush" into production.

For schedule and critical paths with implicit milestone markers, see
the MS Project 2000 chart in the pismere locker:

Accomplishments in July
-----------------------
- Campuswide DHCP works for W2k.

- DNS works but not campuswide. We use a dedicated server and zone
tables.

- New Kerberos binaries are available for Software Release.

- Local host mail proxies for POP and IMAP.

- AFS 3.6 is working, with some limitations.

- Qing and Tom attended and reported on PDC. Paul organized the MSR
conference, and Danilo and Dave prepared presentations.

- Revised zephyr, plop, and KLP.

- Continued Access on/off requirements.

- AboutBox dll implemented in KLP, plop and zephyr.

- Modular installers can be built with scripts.

- Remote install testing is underway.

- We moved, with only minor surprises.

Goals for August
----------------
- More remote install testing.

- Admin task:
 Project Center

- Continue with Software Release Team on zephyr, plop, leash32 and
klpr.

- Keep seeking techpubs, training and support plans.

- Expand DNS.

- IE certificate support (jis).

- Access on/off requirements.

- Finish kerberos single sign-on functionality.

- Populate the AD using DCMs and other programs.

- Get AFS 3.6 working with group policies intact.

- Work with NetOps to assist with AD population, Athena backup, and
syslog.

- Washing machine (overnight build), backups.

Issues
------
- Several staff are away for extended periods, so without AD progress,
we hope meanwhile to perform remote install tests.

- When shall we get MS RTM source code? Hotfix source?

- Is Kerberos 1.2 beta ready for revised apps?

- Does the AUI Dash & gnome require Pismere revisions?

Additional comments
-------------------
- Student coders are working rapidly, and we expect a new staffperson.
Barring unforseen Kerberos, AFS or AD obstacles, we should be able to
meet our fall pilot date.
