SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UPI) -- US West Communications said Wednesday it
will spend $300 million to develop and sell its high-speed data
transmission services to businesses.
US West said there is a growing need for businesses with networked
computer systems to transfer data, graphics and video images at a faster
rate than currently available.
``The ability to instantly send and access many forms of information
has become critical,'' said Catherine Hapka, US West Communications vice
president. ``We want to respond by delivering interconnect services all
the way to the desktop.''
The regional phone company, based in Englewood, Colo., made the
disclosure at a Tele-Communications Association show in San Diego.
US West said it would begin offering several new data-transfer
services next year in selected locations.
The move comes at a time when telecommunications concerns are
building private networks to compete with the data-transmission services
offered by Baby Bells such as US West.
``We believe the availability of switched wideband services will
tremendously stimulate use of the public network for all types of high-
speed connectivity,'' Hapka said. ``We are building the solid foundation
necessary to support the increasing convergence of computers and
communications.''
