Somebody wondered if the August issue tried to characterize ANS,
CO+RE, CIX (PSINet, AlterNet, CERFNET), MFS, etc. Nope, but it's
not a bad idea. We've been wanting to do an issue of Matrix News
on private IP providers.
So, we'd like to solicit position statements from each long-haul IP
provider saying what they think the important issues are and what they
plan to do about them. If you have other relevant documents (such as
meeting reports), we encourage you to send those for potential
inclusion, as well. The list of providers is not limited to those
named above, but, due to limited space, we can not, unfortunately,
take statements from each NSFNET regional.
In addition, we'll need a contact person so we can ask specific
questions, by electronic mail, telephone, or in person (InterOp
would be a good place for the latter).
We solicit questions from readers of com-priv (or anyone else).
We will use that input to construct the question list that we will ask
each of the participating providers.
We may ask for size adjustments or clarifications of statements or
answers, but you will see drafts before they are printed, and we
will not make any changes without approval. We reserve the right
to accept or reject any submitted material. We also reserve the
right to include our own analysis.
Doing this right will take a bit of time, since drafts will have to
go back and forth. Realistically, we are talking about the November
or December issue. We will make all material in that issue available
online six weeks after the paper copies are mailed (it's only $30/year :-).
Providers, here's a chance to explain the complex issues that brief
electronic mail messages, general statements, and short talks don't
convey well.
Users, here's a chance to have your questions answered, and to have
them all in one place.
Shall we do it?
Thanks,
John
