Sigh. Button pushed. I rarely flame at people, but this one annoyed
me - please skip if you don't want to see yet another flame (although
this one isn't about EFF :-)).
>heavens no. I get flamed. Ever since the brouhaha over Canter & Siegel
>the net has become increasingly hostile to ads, even if they're clearly
>marked in the mail header, like mine was.
I don't hear anyone complaining about DEC or Sun advertising on the
net. You don't suppose it is because they aren't filling people's
mailbox with junk do you?
>But because email flames are
>an "in your face" kind of thing, they can be upsetting.
You aren't actually expecting sympathy, are you?
>I've made
>mistakes on the net. I still have reason to pause about advertising here.
Hmmm... you knew about Canter & Siegel, yet you make the same mistake?
>But we're all in this together, learning and experimenting.
Right. You might learn from mistakes others make instead of repeating
them.
>I do find
>it's a classic clash between the commercial and academic worlds.
This is what annoyed me. Anyone else getting tired of people who are
trying to make a quick buck on the Internet using mass marketting
techniques complain it's a "clash between the commercial and academic
worlds" when they get flamed. Does anyone, even mass marketers, enjoy
getting junk mail and auto-dial solicitations and want to see the same
crap in their emailbox every day? Could it be that the "clash" is
caused by junk mail victims being able to fight back instead of being
forced to passively accept the useless drivel?
>No longer is the Internet the playpen of professors.
While I'm sure there are people who still believe the Internet is a
commerce free environment, I sincerely doubt the customers of IP
service providers who are forced to pay for email when they download
it consider it a "playpen of professors".
Please go hire somebody to make you a WWW home page...
