THE ELECTRONIC NEWSSTAND WINS FIRST PLACE AT
THE INTERACTIVE ADVERTISING AND MEDIA AWARDS
(LOS ANGELES, CA, April 12, 1994) -- The Electronic Newsstand, a
Washington-based company founded last year to market magazines, books,
newsletters and business information via the global Internet, has won
first place in its category at the first-ever Interactive Advertising
and Media Awards.
The Electronic Newsstand, a popular service on the Internet,
received first-place honors in the category: Direct Response
On-Line Advertising and Marketing. The awards, sponsored by Advertising
Age, were presented earlier this evening at New Media Expo in Los Angeles.
Jeffrey Dearth, founder and chief executive officer of The Electronic
Newsstand, said, "I am absolutely delighted that a small entrepreneurial
company like The Electronic Newsstand can compete and win in such a
distinguished arena. Credit should go to Rob Raisch of The Internet
Company and all of the others associated with this project who have
worked so hard since we started last July. And, of course, thanks to
all of our clients who have taken a leap of faith to join us on this
pioneering trail."
The Electronic Newsstand was launched in July 1993 to provide the
more than 20 million users of the global Internet with the most current,
interesting and entertaining articles from the world's leading magazine
publishers. Established with eight magazines, The Electronic Newsstand
now carries more than 80 titles.
During the first week of operation, The Newsstand was accessed by
Internet users more than 2,000 times per day. Today, The Newsstand is
accessed by users more than 40,000 times per day and has sold magazine
subscriptions in 18 different countries, including Australia, Canada,
Croatia, England, Estonia, France, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Norway,
Poland, the Republic of China, Singapore and South Africa.
In addition, The Electronic Newsstand Inc. opened The Electronic
Bookstore and a section for Business Publications and Newsletters in
January 1994 and has also developed Business Information Centers.
A Business Information Center is a 24-hour selling platform that
places a company's information on the Internet for easy access by its
customers and potential customers. It's "informational" advertising
that allows corporations to provide substantive and comprehensive
information about their products and services in a consumer-friendly
format.
Lufthansa Airlines and the Lincoln car division of Lincoln-Mercury
are the first companies to create Business Information Centers within
The Electronic Newsstand.
