Actually, it doesn't.  Fundamental improvements to communication are
usually on the list of "basic" contributors to physical advances in a
society, along with manufacturing and transportation improvements.  I think
that the combined innovations of digital communications and packetization
constitute just such a fundamental advance, by virtue of the flexibility
and universality offered.
