I wasn't aware that I was disagreeing with Karl, while our opinions might
not match one to one, they are not all to far apart.

I'm a member of the board of directors of EUnet Ltd., one of the more
substantial CIX members.
However, naturally, I'm not participating as official company spokesperson
in this discussion, nor am I making any formal statements on behalf of
EUnet Ltd, nor of the Swiss national EUnet organisation that I'm responsible
for. I am only voicing my personal, private opinions.
I would be very surprised if any of the participants in this discussion would
even consider posting to this list if our statements would be construed to
be official company positions (that there is a certain risk of this happening
is clear).
Now obviously, sometimes there will be a close match between personal opinion,
and formal company policy, for example in the case of Karl, and just as
obviously my personal opinion will in one way or another influence our board
decisions, which again will be reflected in the way our representative to the
CIX association votes.
My main motivation in participating in this discussion in the first place is
to see if there are actual problems with the current CIX charter and member-
ship agreements. If somebody actually turns up with well reasoned arguments
for change, they will flow back in to my and our decisions.

The CIX meets a serious need in a very appropriate manner. It's currently
essentially the only vehicle that allows a commercial Internet and commercial
ISP's to exists. On the other hand a lot of "de facto" connectivity exists
that works on the basis of pure technical reasons without formal agreements
and as has been said numerous times the CIX does not stop this from happening.
The current conflict seems to have it roots in people suddenly realizing
that the "Internet" isn't what they thought it was and they want the CIX
to give them back their dream (for free).
