Ahh. What is missing (IMHO) is the difference is support expectation.
A shell account has a lower pain threshold wrt endstation configuration
than a SLIP or PPP link. This may or may not be offset by the pain
threshold of localized application support.
(gopher was a poor choice. CuSeeMe or Mosaic are better choices for
IP @the desktop.)
