I had talked variously to Walter, Ray, and Stephen earlier today about
Bobby's discovery that when you merge authority records, this
sometimes creates (two) phantom holdings on one of the associated bib
records.
After reading Walter's email about presence/absence of 049 $c, I
tested the merge process several more times, with several variations.
Unfortunately, the results are not straightforward (and it's not easy
to illustrate the process without going to the board), but:
*In every case where phantom holdings were generated on a bib record,
that bib record had an 049 with a $c.
*However, I didn't generate phantom holdings every time the bib record
had an 049 with a $c. (The order in which I retrieved the associated
authority records to merge was also a factor.)
*In those cases which resulted in phantom holdings, I only got them on
the bib records for one of the authors, even when bib records for both
authors had an 049 $c.
*Normally, when you file an authority record you get a message saying
something like "indexing into the main database." In those cases
where phantom holdings resulted, the message additionally said
something like "reindexing bibliographic records."
P.S. In all cases the 049 $c was pre-existing.
