Grant and I talked some more about the authorities 008 problem
yesterday. Grant had spoken to Michel, who was very discouraging
about the possibility of anything being done before the GMA. Michel's
only suggestion was one of the editing shortcuts we already had
figured out.
Until our discussion, Grant had not realized that this was an ongoing
problem with newly created authority records--he had assumed that this
was a GMA problem only (G. confirmed what we suspected in Ad-Cat last
week, that what happens in the GMA won't necessarily be the way things
happen with future loading, or live creation of data).
This led to the following email message from Grant to Michel, sent
late yesterday (sorry I got overzealous with control "k" and deleted
the header):

I discussed the authorities issue with Jo Lynne this afternoon. She
had, indeed, already discovered how to slide the defaults into a record
being edited.
We also understand that if the GMA has limited capabilities to use
defaults it's probably too late to do much about it. The main problem
as we see it is that if you create provisional authority records within
the online itself you get an 008 that needs to be fixed before you can
refile it. It would seem that something besides the tables in the
system creates the default 008 tags and it could / should be fixed.
Maybe that would help the GMA, too. (We ask for future GMA customers as
a senseless act of bibliographic kindness.)
When you've got the time we'd also like to get some idea of how getting
our database authorized would work. After we've had some sleep...
zzzzzzz... Grant
