Circ codes update:
As the result of a discussion yesterday with David Ferriero, I have
drafted a revised list of circulation codes. Basically, I would
describe the new list as more realistic. In coming up with the circ
codes, I had tried to include all our different loan policies, even
though Advance can't accomodate the definitions of the more
complicated loan policies. (My hope was that a future version of
Advance might be able to accomodate them, and in the meantime we'd
just override any inappropriate due date/time.)
The table which is used to define a circ code (i.e., loan policy)
makes it simple to define certain things: number of hours or days of the loan
period; number of renewals, if any; amount of fine; grace period.
However, this table does NOT provide a mechanism for things like this:
"Due first hour of next open day if time of charge is 7 hours or less
prior to local closing time"; or "May go out overnight at one hour
prior to closing".
The new list of circ codes DOES include what we need as far as "the
basics": specific loan periods in terms of hours, days, and weeks;
specific renewal rules; grace period and fines. For any circ code
where there's the possibility that the due date/time will need to be
adjusted at time of check-out, there will be an override option. The
circ assistant will see a message on the screen asking if the due
date/time displayed is acceptable, or if an alternative due date/time
should be entered. This means circ staff will have to be alert in the
case of hourly and reserve items which should have a different due
date depending on the time of day, or day of the week, when check-out
occurs.
Revising the circ codes has a major impact on the holdings table and
also our reserves documentation. RESERVES SUBGROUP NOTE: All the
reserves circ codes are being eliminated, since they are redundant.
The "hourly" codes accomplish the same thing. This affects the cheat
sheets.
Here is the revised list of circ codes; it hasn't been finally
approved yet, but I expect it will be.
