Grant,

I'm still struggling to get up to speed on Advance after my leave, so
pardon my ignorance, but...

It appears that all the provisional authority records created in the
GMA were created with invalid values in the 008 (aka fixed) fields.
This means that one cannot do any editing of an authority record
without going into the 008 field and replacing all the invalid values
with valid values. This is very bad.

I got Sam and Stephen to look at this, since they are more
knowledgeable about Advance. They tried going into ASTE in the
authorities set-up menu and keying in valid values. This doesn't
automatically change the provisional authority records. What
it does do is: now if one retrieves an authority record, goes into
the 008 field expanded screen, and then "files" the 008 field, one is
permitted to do any other editing and then "file" the authority
record. This still means many more steps than one ought to have to
take just to edit a record.

So, my questions are:

Are we missing something here? Is there some other way to change
the existing 008 values to valid values?

If not, what about the second GMA? How can we prevent this from
happening again?

Thanks for any light you can shed on the subject,

Jo Lynne
